A Black And White Cairnwood Estate Wedding in September

Val and Kevin’s September 26th Cairnwood Estate wedding in Ambler, Pennsylvania is one of those galleries that makes you stop scrolling and say, ” Wow, that looks like so much fun — I wish I had been there!” And the photos only capture what really happened.

I can confirm: this wedding was a blast. Tears, belly laughs, heartfelt toasts, dances with zero inhibitions, and flamingo beer bongs — all set inside one of the most stunning historic wedding venues in the Philadelphia suburbs.

A First Look Made for Fairytales

This is one of my all-time favorite first look backdrops.

Val descending the grand staircase while Kevin waited patiently at the bottom, eyes closed, for the moment he was finally allowed to open them and catch his first glimpse of her. Some of their closest friends and family waited quietly in the balcony above — tearfully watching their first interaction. It was one of those moments I’ll carry for a long time.

Cairnwood Estate is a National Historic Landmark built in 1902 for John T. Pitcairn Jr., sitting on sweeping grounds in Ambler, PA. The Beaux-Arts architecture features ornate stonework, soaring ceilings, original ironwork details, and that iconic staircase. It sets the tone for wedding portraits in a way that almost no other venue can replicate. It’s meant for fairytale weddings. Val and Kevin’s day fit beautifully in that category.

September Light and All Black Wedding Party Attire

We had the most gorgeous September sunlight that afternoon. The kind that makes everything feel like it was shot on film without trying.

Paired with the backdrop of Cairnwood and the sophisticated all-black wedding attire on every member of their party, these are honestly some of the most stunning wedding party portraits I’ve ever taken.

Val and Kevin are also the undisputed king and queen of the smize. Which didn’t hurt, not even a little.

Cairnwood Estate Cocktail Hour (Courtesy of Maple)

Cocktail hour was officially sponsored by their sweet pup, Maple. Cocktail napkins read “drinks on me! Love, Maple” — and small cutouts of Maple’s face were on every single drink stirrer. The guests were obsessed. And as a dog-mom myself, same.

They also invited Allie Paints Love to set up during cocktail hour, painting watercolor portraits of guests on the spot. I LOVE when couples add unique and fun touches like this that elevate the guest experience and double as keepsake wedding favors. It’s these kinds of detail that your guests talk about long after the day is over!

Outdoor Tented Wedding Reception Design

If the ceremony was the tearful part, the reception was pure joy.

Underneath a fluttering white outdoor wedding tent, Val and Kevin witnessed heartfelt toasts in their honor. There was also dancing with absolutely zero inhibitions and flamingo beer bongs, which I genuinely did not see coming — but fully supported from start to finish. Obviously, the brainchild of their very hilarious Best Man, who kept us on our toes all day long.

Val changed into a chic 3D floral mini dress during the second half of the reception to dance the night away. It reminded me of one of my other fav reception dresses that Amanda wore during her Condado Vanderbilt wedding in Puerto Rico this spring. I am absolutely loving this trend of strapless floral mini dresses and seeing how each bride uniquely styles her second wedding dress!

Then came the cake cutting. Val and Kevin cut out what I am confident was the biggest single slice of wedding cake I have ever witnessed a couple attempt. It was hilarious. But also — why shouldn’t they?!
